Hello everybody and welcome to the Beyond The Mat Commentary for the Royal Rumble 2005, as you know starting last week we have deicided to bring back these commentaries, the reason being is that BM and Myself as you know are unable to generally make it too the live Beyond The Mat Shows, I have resurfaced in the chatroom recently but I am unable to appear live. The same can be said with BM, so instead of keeping away from Beyond The Mat, BM and Myself will generally be the ones who will be recording and doing match commentaries, ranging from just about anything, the good, the bad, and the damn right awful of TNA!
However tonight, continuing on our selection of Royal Rumbles, we bring you a Royal Rumble Match that changed the landscape of WWE from 2005 to the present day, My Name is James and I am joined by the owner of Scyther Podcasts, the man who is the face of the team, Karl. I am also joined by my cohort in crime, the right hand man of these commentaries mister BM.
So Royal Rumble 2005, There is a lot of back-story regarding this Rumble match so allow me to explain all of this before we get into the Royal Rumble match:
This entire Rumble story really started back at Survivor Series 2004 when you had the Team Guerrero/Team Angle match and the Team Evolution/Team Orton matches. At those two matches, Cena returned and got revenge on Carlito who beat Cena for the U.S Title; four days after Cena won it in a best of five series, the final being at No Mercy in October. Batista who was Evolution’s big hitter at the time was starting to look at what Randy Orton had done with his World Championship win at Summerslam, prompting Batista to look more carefully at then World Champion Triple H, starting to tease a potential face turn around December of 2004. The main plight of Triple H knowing that Batista and Flair were to be In the Rumble was to make sure that one of them won the match so they could face the Smackdown champion, whomever that would be at the time at Wrestlemania so he could beat them, this would make Evolution dual champions, and the most dominant faction in WWE.
Added the fuel for Royal Rumble 2005 was the Tough Enough witch returned for a final run before taking a seven year absence, the difference in this Tough Enough was that it wasn’t an actual show, instead it was more of a segment on Smackdown. The winner of the tough enough would receive in the sum of $1 Million to help them in there WWE career, but they would also grant themselves a place in the 2005 Royal Rumble. More on that in the match.
Edge and Shawn Michaels had a brief feud with each other after the Elimination Chamber match at New Years Revolution 2005 where HBK cost Edge the World Title with a superkicked and counting the pinfall (HBK was the referee in the match) This sparked a quick feud with these two having a match in the opening contest at Royal Rumble in which Edge won in just under twenty minutes. The reason I bring this forward is that both men were also scheduled to be in the Royal Rumble Match, keep that in Notice.
The other major note to bring forward to this rumble match was the involvement of one Mr Kurt Angle, Having been put into a triple threat match for the WWE Championship against JBL and Big Show and being the man who was pinned, it wasn’t a good night for Angle. So just before the Rumble match, Angle stole Nunzio’s Entrant spot in the Rumble, thus gaining himself a chance into the Rumble match. Besides that I think that is the basic back-story of the Royal Rumble match.
Interesting Notes about the 2005 Royal Rumble
- This was to be Eddie Guerrero’s last appearance at a Royal Rumble event as he would pass away in late 2005
- This was Benoit’s second Rumble match in a row in which he started as one of the first Two, in 2004 he was Number One and Randy Orton was Number Two
- Daniel Puder, Kenzo Suzuki, Luther Reigns, Muhammad Hassan, Orlando Jordon, Rene Dupree, Simon Dean, Jonathon Coachman, Mark Jindrak, Snitsky, Paul London all made there Royal Rumble Debuts
- This was Hardcore Holly’s second Rumble match in Ten Years, the other being in 1996
- Due to the ending, when Vince came out and got into the ring he actually blew both of his quads out and was rarely seen on WWE until November 2005 when he publicly fired Eric Bischoff from his post as Raw GM
- The Attack on Scotty 2 Hotty, was the third time that a Royal Rumble entrant had never made it to the match, thus making the 1998 (Skull), 2004 (Spike Dudley) and 2005 Rumble Matches effectively a 29 man match.
- RVD was scheduled to be in the Royal Rumble match but a knee injury in December 2004, sidelined RVD for just over one full year, returning at Royal Rumble 2006
- Kane makes his eighth straight appearance in a Royal Rumble match
- This was Chris Jericho’s last appearance at a Royal Rumble event until 2008 when he faced the returning JBL
- Christian’s last rumble until 2010 with his ECW Championship match
